大学時代は友情を持って渡邊と競っていた

――セント・ジョセフ大にいた頃、あなたはフォワードでしたよね。ポイントガードをプレーするにあたって自信が持てているのはなぜですか？

僕の場合は早い年代から始まっています。若い頃に背が高いと、周りの子たちより大きいというだけでセンターやパワーフォワードをプレーすることが多くなりがちです。でも僕はボールを持たせてもらえたんですよ、センターとしてティップオフをやっていても。それが大きく影響したと思います。高校でも大学でもそれぞれのレベルで上達でき、ボールを持ってプレーできたことで、あとあと自信を持ってプレーできるようになりました。コート上でプレーする可能性があるすべてのポジションを経験したので、目前状況を読んで対応することができるようになったんです。
それと、ボールを持ったときに派手なドリブルなど、いろいろとやりすぎないようにしています。やろうと思えばできることですが、それよりも行きたいところにどうやって到達するかに集中することにしています。
Like I said, it started at a young age for me. Obviously if you’re tall, everyone, when you’re younger, you obviously got to play the center, power forward just because you’re always taller than everybody. But when that happened, I always still had the ball in my hand even if I was jumping at center to start the game. I stiill had the ball in my hand so I think that played a major role and so obviously each level, high school and then going to college, each level I just got better at it, you know. It helped over the years for me just keeping the ball in my hand and being confident. I played every position that you came to play on the basketball court so I can read and react to what’s going on. You know I also really don’t try to do too much when the ball is in my hand with all the fancy dribble and all that. I mean I can play but I’m pretty locked in on where I’m trying to get to and just staying in that rule.

――あなたは渡邊選手と大学時代に対戦したことがありますね。当時の彼の印象、今の印象はどんなものですか？

関係性はずっと続いています。今あなたが話されたように、僕はユウタを大学時代から知っていました。今日もまさしく一緒でした。コートに最後まで残ってシューティングしていたのはパスカル（シアカム）でしたが。僕たちは以前から仲良くしています。セント・ジョセフ大にいた当時から彼のことは認識していました。「アイツ何者？」、「あの背の高い左利きは誰だい？」みたいな感じでしたね。彼がNBAを目指しているということで、毎回やる気満々でお互いにプレーしていました。A10ではそんな風に知られるプレーヤーがさほど多くはないですからね。僕らはいつもそんな思いや友情を持って競い合っていましたよ。お互いのプレーに敬意を払っていました。バスケットボールの世界は狭くて、同じ人々の中でこうした巡り合わせが繰り返されます。ここで一緒になった今も、あの頃のことをよく話しますよ。今ここに出てくる前もそうでしたし。昔からの知り合いが身近にいて成長を見られるというのはいいことですね。
Relationship is still going. I mean like you said I’ve known Yuta since back in college. And we were just…, we literally just met him. Pascal was the last one in the gym just shooting. We have that bond. Just the bond we already have. And me going against him back then when I was at Saint Joes, I’ve always noticed who he was. I mean I was like hey who’s this guy? Who is this tall lefty? And it was always out there that he was an NBA prospect and that always just pushed us to go against each other because being in Atlantic 10, you don’t really get too many players that get that knowledge. And it was just something that we always had. I mean friendship is always there, always competitive against each other. We always respected each other’s game. And that’s just the basketball world and everything always works in a circle. And us being here today, we always talk about those days like we were literally just talking about before I came out here. Yeah, it just helps to have people around that you knew over years and see them grow.

――アンソニー・エドワーズのモンスター・ダンクについては話しましたか？

ベンブリー　あれは記憶から消し去りたくて…（笑）　でも確かに、あの試合の直後は僕もカイル（ラウリー）も、他のみんなもロッカールームでジョークにしていましたね。ああいったこともありますよ、でも、あのダンクは振り返らないようにしています（笑）
No, we tried to delete that from my memory. But we definitely, definitely after the game, it was definitely something me and Kyle was joking on and everybody in the locker room joked about it. That’s just something that’s going to happen. But yeah, we try not to look back at that dunk (laugh).

　2016NBAドラフトの1巡目21位でアトランタ・ホークスに指名されたベンブリーは、昨シーズンまで4年間をホークスで過ごしたが、その道のりは華々しいというよりは地道な努力の積み重ねだった。それだけに、ベンブリーは渡邊の立場について理解や共感ができるのではないかと思う。大学時代からの絆を大切にし、悪い思い出は「笑い飛ばして忘れちゃえ」と言ってくれる仲間がいることがわかり、その仲間意識が今も深まり続けているように思えたやり取りだった。
