トロント・ラプターズの渡邊雄太が急遽Gリーグでのプレーを志願し、それが実現した日本時間1月25日のラプターズ905対ウェスチェスター・ニックス戦。3Pショット3本を含む24得点、10リバウンドのダブルダブルに加え、ブロックショットも4本記録して112-105の勝利に貢献した後、渡邊は会見に臨み心境を語っていた。以下は記者たちとのやり取りだ。

――試合を振り返っての感想

まず、勝てたことが良かったです。それがほしかったので。でも僕を迎えてくれた905の皆さんに感謝したいですね。僕はかつてGリーグでプレーしていたので、特にプレーヤーたちがNBAからこうしてGリーグに降りてきてプレーすることを必ずしも良いと思わないことを知っています。出場時間が減ったり注目度が下がったりみたいなことが起きますからね。それは理解しています。でも彼らは快く僕を迎えてくれて僕は905のためにプレーすることを楽しむことができました。とても楽しかったです。
I mean first of all, we got W. That’s what I really want it. But first of all, actually I want to really thank to the 905 organization for having me. You know I used to play G League. So, I know especially as a player, sometimes they don’t like you know anyway guys to you know come down and play for the G League team because they get less minutes and they get less attention, stuff like that. So, I really understand. But you know they welcomed me with the open arms and I really enjoyed playing for the 905. So, that was really fun.

――自身の出来について

正直、そんなに良い出来とは思いません。でも少なくとも、一生懸命40分くらいをプレーしました。もっとシュートは決めないと。18本中8本成功は良くありません。でも10本リバウンドを獲れたし、4ブロックできたのはまずまずよかったです。試合前に話していたことが少しはできたかなと思います。
I honestly thought I didn’t play that well. But at least I played really hard for like 40 minutes. I’ve gotta shoot better. 8 for 18…, that’s not good. But I got 10 boards, four blocks. That’s pretty good. So, you know I thought like I had some accomplishment that I said before the game.

――チームメイトたちの激励

みんなが「アグレッシブにいけ」みたいなことを言い続けてくれました。なにしろ前半は不安定でしたからね。うまくシュートできませんでしたし、リズムもありませんでしたから…。でもみんな「アグレッシブにいけ」とか「焦るな」みたいに言ってくれました。ありがたい言葉でしたね。
Well, they kept telling me “Be aggressive” stuff like that because especially I had a rough first half. I wasn’t shooting well you know. I wasn’t really with any rhythm so…. But they kept telling me you know “Be aggressive”, “Don’t rush”, stuff like that. So I really appreciate the advice.

――一緒にプレーしたラプターズのダラノ・バントンとマラカイ・フリンとのやりとり

よく知っている2人とは、第3Qまでの劣勢の原因が僕たちだったので、もっと頑張ろうと話し、実際それができてディフェンスから厳しくいくことができました。10点くらい負けていた時間帯もあったんじゃないでしょうか。でもはね返すことができました。第4Qがすべてですね。
You know I know both of them very well. And I mean first, well…, until third quarter we are the kind of reason why we are losing. So we talked like we’ve gotta play harder and you know and we picked that up and I thought we started with the defense really hard. You know we were down by like 10 at some point. But we came back so that was really fourth quarter

――久しぶりにGリーグでプレーした感想

　楽しみました。良かったです。僕はGリーグを良く知っていますここは努力の場であって、簡単にプレーできる場所ではありません。でもみんな楽しんでいたと思いますし、僕にメンフィスで過ごした最初の2年間を思い出させてくれました。Gリーグでたくさんの試合に出て、頑張っていましたからね。目を覚まさせてくれるような体験でした。
I enjoyed it. I like it you know. I know G League very well. You know it’s a whole grind so it’s not easy to play here. But I saw all guys enjoying it and you know and that was kind of…, remind me my first two season with Memphis. And I played a lot of G League games and you know how I was grinding so…. That was a good wake-up call.

――ラプターズ905のパトリック・ムトンボHCについて

以前から彼の下でプレーしてみたい気持ちがありました。昨年も話していましたし、サマーリーグでも話しましたよ。ついにそれが実現して、こうして彼の下でプレーできてうれしいです。
I always wanted to play for him (905’s coach Patrick Mutombo). You know last year we talked about it. Summer League…, we talked about it. But finally that happened so I’m glad I came down here and played for him.
