ナイジェリア代表との試合で始まり日本代表、フランス代表と続くこのプール（グループB）はとてもタフだ、とリッツォッティAコーチは言う。「アメリカ代表にとってはとても良いテストになるし、以降の対戦に向けた準備になります」

準備不足にも崩れることのない絶対的な自信

　しかしこう聞けば、感じられるのは警戒感よりも自信の方だ。何があっても勝つのは自分たちという前提で言葉が出てくる。相手の強みを認めながらも、圧倒的なメンタルエッジを持って今大会に臨んでいることがやはり強く伝わってきた。

　リッツォッティAコーチは、無観客開催についても触れた。「彼女たちが自国ファンの声援の中でプレーできないというのは残念なことです。正直、それも楽しみにしていたので。どのオリンピックでも、満員のアリーナで、特に開催国と対戦するのはハイライトとの一つだと思うんですよね」

　これは情景としての楽しみだけを語っているのではない。究極のアウェイで勝ってこそチャンピオン。それが自分たちをより強くしてくれる、という考えだ。男子チームのヘッドコーチを務めるグレッグ・ポポビッチ氏が、NBAで率いるサンアントニオ・スパーズのプレーヤーたちに話したのと同じような心境か。

　地元ファンの声援がないからといって日本代表を見くびるようなことない、手ごわい相手で、コーチ陣も良く考えをプレーヤーたちに、オンボールスクリーンのディフェンスをよく教え込んいる。私たち（アメリカ代表）に対してはディフェンスでインサイドを固めてゴール下で簡単な得点を許さないようにしてくるでしょう…、と次々と語られた言葉から、準備不足と言われる今回のアメリカ代表にも、知識としての蓄えが十分にあることが感じられた。

　アメリカ代表自体の準備期間が短かったことに関して、当然リッツォッティAコーチも認識しているが、それはUSAバスケットボールとしては受け入れざるを得ないことと割り切っているようだ。WNBAシーズン真っただ中であることから、個々のプレーヤーは、故障を抱えているポイントガードのダイアナ・タラシを除けばトップコンディション。それが融合できれば金メダルをねらう力があるという絶対的な自信が言葉の節々から伝わってくる。

自チームの調子を上げることと対戦相手を知り、対策を用意することは表裏一体のようなところがあるだろう。しかし、対戦相手の国に住んでいたリッツォッティAコーチの知識や感覚があればこそ、アメリカ代表としても自チーム側のコンディション向上を優先していけるということか。

いずれにしても、両チームをはじめすべてのアスリートが健康で安全に東京オリンピックを乗り切れますように。

　このやりとりは22日のズーム会見のものだが、リッツォッティAコーチは終了間際に、「中学校時代は日本で過ごしたので、かつて遊びまわった場所を訪れることができないのは残念です。でも、東京に戻って来ることができて、オリンピックでアメリカ代表の仕事をさせてもらっていることをとてもうれしく思っています」と再び笑顔を見せていた。何の心配もなく東京滞在を楽しめるときが戻ってきたら、ぜひ思い出の地にも足を運んでもらいたいものだ。

＜リッツォッティAコーチの英文回答＞
I’m very familiar with Japan. And they are my scout. I remember scouting back in 2019 when they came to play in Washington D.C. when I was the coach at George Washington. They played us on our home court.

So I had that scout back then. I remember you know how difficult they were and it took us a long time, three and a half quarters to pull away from them. So there is a lot of respect from the United States for this team. I’ve also watched them recently to get ready for our game on June（Julyの言い間違いと思われる） 30th so…, very familiar with their guard play, how difficult their point guard is to guard off the ball screens and how much she creates for her teammates. The fact that they spread the floor, they make it really difficult for you to pack the paint because they play a lot of five-out. they’ll set a lot of high ball screens where all the other players are beyond the perimeter. And almost everybody on their team shoots the three-ball really really consistently.

So although they are undersized and at times teams like ourselves should be able to take advantage of them defensively, they are really hard match-up for a lot of teams offensively. So a lot of respect.
We feel like our…, every pool is tough but we feel specifically that our pool starting with Nigeria and the Japan and France is really gonna test us and really get us ready.

And you know it’s a little bit disappointing that they don’t get to play us in front of their home crowd. To be honest I think we were looking forward to that. I think that one of the highlights of any Olympics is to be able to play in front of a full arena, especially against the home team.

But we’re not gonna take them lightly just because there is no fans there. We know that they’re a formidable opponent. Their coach does a good job of scheming well, on ball screen defense. And I think they’ll be ready to you know pack the paint on us defensively and make it difficult for us to score in you know easy baskets around the basket.
